Great Texas Magic Festival
That's me performing my walk-around magic at the Wylie, Texas magic festival last Thursday. The turnout was great, and everybody loved the magic on the street as well as the stage show at the Wylie Event Center. In fact, everybody in attendance loved the magic show so much, the Dallas Magic Clubs have already decided to put on another show next year! I'll have photographs of that stage show soon, so be watching.
Shoot Ogawa Lecture
I just attended an awesome magic lecture by famous Japanese magician Shoot Ogawa, who visited the Dallas Magic Club to share some of his favorite secrets. I especially appreciated his version of the Chinese Linking Rings, which he calls "The Ninja Rings". He is one of the few magicians that can perform the classic linking ring trick with an audience volunteer holding the rings! If you know how it works, you can appreciate how amazing that is. If anyone is interested, we have another great lecture coming up on Sunday, November 1. Professor Lawrence Hass, associate dean of the McBride School of Magic in Las Vegas will be lecturing and releasing his new book Inspirations. E-mail me if you want more details.
Wylie Rodeo Performance
The Great Texas Magic Festival in Wylie, Texas is off to a great start! That's me performing walk-around magic at the annual Wylie rodeo to promote ticket sales for the Night of Wonder stage magic show that will be held at the Wylie First Baptist Church Event Center on Thursday, October 29, from 7:30 until 9:00 pm. We also have strolling magic being performed on the streets and in several local restaurants the whole week from October 24th through the 29th. You can get more details and buy tickets to the show at TheMagicofWylie.com. Tickets are only $10, and we have several award-winning magicians scheduled to perform. This is a family-friendly show, so be sure to get tickets for the whole family. And, of course, I will be there during the week performing my close-up magic, so come on out and be a part of the magic!
Axel Hecklau Lecture
Just attended a fantastic magic lecture here in Dallas by an old friend, Axel Hecklau, a magician from Germany best known for "Newsflash", his instant torn and restored newspaper trick that he shared with us, along with many other amazing effects. My favorite was his "Knife Through Solid Spoon", pictured here. We also learned a really cool way to make a paper rose to give out as a gift. If you are interested in getting on the invitation list for upcoming lectures, e-mail me, and I will pass your request along to the Dallas Magic Club.
Summer Splash Party
I've just attended one of the most awesome parties ever, the annual Summer Splash party, hosted by local Dallas magician Dal Sanders and his wife Cinde. Professional entertainers and their families and friends come from all over the country to attend this party. That's me with fellow magician Daryl Sprout and his "lovely assistants" Penny the corn snake and Capone the lizard that appear with him in his Snake Encounters magic show. We also had fire jugglers that entertained us after dark, and I got to entertain guests with my walk-around magic. Thanks to Dal and Cinde for another successful party!
ADD Christmas in July Party!
July 18, 2015
If you missed the Christmas in July party Friday night at RBC Dallas, you missed one fantastic magic show! That's me on stage with Heather and Reuben, who both volunteered to be my "lovely assistants" for the show. I opened the show with a new magic effect that I have never performed before, and it went over great! In fact, the show was such a huge success that the host of the show wants to promote my magic on her radio show, and I had several people ask me for my business card afterward, including two event planners, a mobile DJ, and a composer who writes music for a local Dallas band, who all want to network with me. Be watching for upcoming events.
Vocal Coaching at SMU
That's me on stage in the Greer Garson theater at SMU in Dallas with my two lovely assistants Allisa and Isaac. In the audience, not pictured, is my new voice coach, Professor Anne Schilling, head of the SMU Speech and Voice department. She arranged this magic show for a group of her students so that she could listen to my voice on stage without a microphone. The show went very well, and afterward, I went home with a three-page list of homework! A special thanks goes to magician Trigg Watson who helped set the whole thing up, and took the time to attend the show and take a few photos.
Dallas Magic Clubs Annual Banquet & Award Ceremony
I've just attended the Dallas Magic Club annual banquet and awards ceremony. That's me visiting with professional entertainer and party planner Cinde Sanders, who was responsible for my successful 60th birthday party. Dallas magician Trigg Watson won the trophy for "Best Magician in Dallas", shown here in the center being presented the award by Club President Frank Seltzer on the left, and two-time award-winning world champion Canadian magician Shawn Farquhar on the right. After dinner and the ceremony, Shawn treated us to an absolutely awesome magic show, and even agreed to stay in Dallas one more night to host a magic lecture the following evening. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time, and the lecture was one of the most educational and entertaining ones that I have ever attended. I just had to get a photo taken of me with Shawn after the lecture; he really is one of the world's greatest magicians, and a great guy off stage, too. Thanks to the Dallas Magic Clubs and to Shawn Farquhar for showing us a great time!
Best Magician In Dallas
The Dallas Magic Club just held our annual contest for Best Magician in Dallas, and, of course, I entered the competition again. I can't believe that it has been a whole year since the last contest! The competition was even more fierce than last year, and everyone gave an outstanding performance. The bad news is, we won't know who won until they announce the winner at the Club banquet in MAY! I don't know if I can sit on all those pins and needles until then, but I will keep everyone posted as soon as I know the results.
Eric Jones Presentation
The Dallas Magic Club just hosted another great magic lecture by master sleight-of-hand artist Eric Jones this past Sunday. Eric is not only a talented magician, but he is one of the best teachers on the subject of magic that I've seen. It was a very entertaining and educational event. If you are interested in magic and would like to attend future magic lectures in the Dallas area, drop me an e-mail and I will get you on the list!
Channel 33 News Appearance Upcoming
January 29, 2015
That's me with Channel 33 news reporter Cristina Caballero. She and her camera crew visited our Dallas Magic Club meeting the other night, and I was one of several local magicians on the schedule to perform. I performed my version of a classic card effect known as "Card Warp". Yes, that is one single playing card, signed by Cristina, turned inside out as I passed it through my bare fingers! Afterward, I put the card in a frame and gave it to her as a souvenir. The show is called Newsfix, and our segment will be broadcast locally on CW33 this Thursday the 29th at 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Be sure to set your TV's to record it!
I've just spent four days in Seattle with my nephew and friends for the Christmas holidays. I was invited to three really fun parties, but only got to perform my magic show at one of them, and this is the only photo that I was able to bring back! That's me looking like Waldo in the Seattle airport. Hope all of you had a wonderful holiday. (Maybe next time I'll hire a photographer!)
Dallas Magic Clubs Christmas Party
Hope all of you loyal readers out there are having a great holiday season. That's me with friends at the annual Dallas Magic Club Christmas party. We have what we call a "white rabbit" gift exchange every year, and this year I got . . . take a deep breath . . . are you ready? . . . a tribble from the original Star Trek episode entitled "Trouble With Tribbles"! Just what I need, a pet that doubles as a kitchen sponge! All I need now is a tiny little top hat to put it in! And Jeff Hallberg, aka Santa Claus, and his wife joined us for the festivities. By the way, if you would like to be a part of the Dallas Magic Club's events, be sure to e-mail me for details. Don't let me have all the fun!
Charles Gauci Lecture
Well, I didn't think I would ever get to see Australian mentalist Charles Gauci again in Dallas, but lo and behold, he did return for another great and entertaining lecture! I am grateful to Charles for sharing some of his awesome secrets with me to help me improve my own magic show. By the way, the magic lectures that I attend are hosted by the Dallas Magic Clubs, and are open to anyone that has a genuine interest in learning the art and craft of magic. E-mail me if you want more info.
It was great to get to take a day off from business and the magic show to relax and spend Thanksgiving Day with my family. That's me on the right in the family photo. Actually, I didn't exactly take the WHOLE day off from my magic show. I did get to spend some time entertaining my three-year-old great nephew Pike with my floating cup illusion! Hope everyone out there reading this also had a wonderful holiday.
Pizza Hut Company Picnic
You may not recognize me in my Western duds, but that's me at the annual Pizza Hut Corporate Picnic, entertaining Pizza Hut employees and their families. We were able to turn a meeting room into an old Western Saloon, where guests enjoyed magic shows, carnival games with prizes, and even a jail that you could break out of! Everyone had a great time, especially the performers, who appear in the group shot. After I rest up a bit, I'll be ready to do it all over again!
60th Birthday Party
October 19, 2014
Well, I never thought I'd see the day, but that's me at Times Ten Wine Cellars in Dallas performing my close-up magic show at my own 60th birthday party! That's right, I've hit the big SIX OHHH, and I'm just getting warmed up! I was joined by my friends and family who have helped me produce my magic show: Wes & Beth Howard, who manage my website and online presence, son Kenneth, who was my stand-in photographer for the evening, Son-in-law Justin and daughter Sheena, employee Jason and his girlfriend, and, finally, Philippe and Patricia Semprez, the filmmakers who helped me produce the videos for my website. The biggest surprise of the evening was the rabbit-in-the-hat birthday cake, provided by my party planner, Cinde Sanders with Amazing Attractions. Thanks to everybody for making this my most memorable birthday party so far!
You can see even more photos on my Facebook page.
David Sousa Lecture
I recently had the privilege of attending a lecture here in Dallas by international FISM contest winning magician David Sousa, pictured here with me. David shared with all of us in attendance the knowledge and creative talents that went into his award-winning act. If you haven't seen David perform, just Google his name and you can watch the whole act set to music. It was fascinating to watch him take us step by step through each move and sleight that made the presentation work so well. Thanks to David Sousa and the Dallas Magic Clubs for hosting this most educational lecture. By the way, these lectures are open to anyone who has a serious interest in learning the art and craft of magic, and we have several more lectures and workshops coming up in the near future. I will keep you posted with dates and times, but don't hesitate to e-mail me if you want more information.

Texas Association of Magicians Convention
I've just attended the annual Texas Association of Magicians convention in Fort Worth. It was great seeing magician Kevin James again. You may remember seeing him on America's Got Talent. He performed his stage act at the convention, and also hosted a very educational lecture on close-up magic, which I was able to attend. But the highlight of the convention for me was getting to meet Max Howard, the very first magician to ever win an Emmy award for his performance as a post Civil War magician. He gave a lecture, tailored specifically for magicians, on how an actor prepares his character and material for the stage. He took a simple magic prop that anyone can buy from a magic shop, and reshaped it into a magnificent theatrical presentation. He also mentioned to me that he may put together more lectures for magicians on showmanship and presentation. I am looking forward to that!
Wayne Houchin Magic Lecture
I've just attended a lecture here in Dallas by award-winning magician, author, and magic creator Wayne Houchin. That's me on the left in the second photo, with Wayne on the right. I must say, this was one of the most entertaining and educational lectures that I've ever attended. Wayne kept us on the edge of our seats with his stunning magic effects, and I learned a lot of new material that I can use in my show. It is not easy to fool a room full of magicians, but Wayne certainly did! Thanks to Wayne and the Dallas Magic Clubs for hosting this excellent event. If you would like to attend a magic lecture, or if you would like more information on the local Dallas Magic Clubs, e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org, and I will keep you posted on upcoming events.
Pike's Third Birthday Party
I recently got to help my great nephew Pike celebrate his third birthday with a little "flower magic". Paper flowers are easy to make, as the photos illustrate, and they make a great gift to give out as a souvenir after a magic show. Kids love them more than any complicated sleight-of-hand. I made these out of multi-colored tissue paper that was used to wrap one of his presents. They can also be made out of a paper dinner napkin when performing walk-around magic at a dinner party.
Summer Splash Party
Just had the time of my life at the annual Summer Splash party, hosted by local entertainers Dal Sanders and his lovely wife Cinde. From left to right, that's young magician and new member of the Dallas Magic Club Caleb Westeen, me, outgoing President of the Society of American Magicians and party host Dal Sanders, and current Dallas Magic Club President Frank Seltzer. The second photo shows me with my friend Jeff Hallberg, aka Santa Claus. I couldn't have asked for better company at a backyard pool party! Thanks to Dal and Cinde, and everyone who worked hard to make the party a great success.
Peter McLanachan Lecture
The Dallas Magic Clubs just hosted a great lecture by famous Scottish magician Peter McLanachan. That's me on the left in the photos with Peter, learning some really superb card magic. Thanks again to Mark Jensen and the Dallas Magic Clubs for hosting this enjoyable and educational lecture.
Daryl Competes at the Dallas Magic Club's Best Performing Magician in Dallas Contest
If you have been wondering what I've been up to lately, I have some exciting news. I have just performed in the Dallas Magic Club's "Best Performing Magician in Dallas" contest. This was my very first time to ever enter a magic competition. The competition was fierce, but I actually think I have a shot at winning! The bad news is, I won't know the results until they are announced at the Magic Club annual banquet on May 20. But, several well-respected, experienced professional entertainers, some of whom were judges in the contest, approached me after the show to tell me what a great job I did. Even if I don't win, I had a great time, and got some experience performing. Thanks to the officers of the Dallas Magic Clubs for producing the show and giving me the opportunity to compete. And thanks to Caleb Westeen, one of our newest club members, and his wife Geneva for volunteering to help me on stage. I've included a few photos of my performance, along with a group shot of the contestants. I'll be sure to post the results as soon as they are announced, so be watching!

Don't forget to write and let me know what you think after you head over and give it a listen.
Marc Salem Lecture
I just had the rare opportunity to attend a lecture by one of the most famous and talented mentalists in the world, Marc Salem! Marc has performed his mentalism show on Broadway, has been featured on Sixty Minutes, and performed in theaters all over the world. He almost never lectures or shares his work with other magicians, so it was a real honor to be invited to hear him speak. He shared some very private, unpublished material with us, which I am looking forward to including in my show. Thanks, Marc, for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.
Dallas Magic Clubs' Christmas Party
Had a great time at the Dallas Magic Clubs annual Christmas party! That's me in front of the tree with presents from the gift exchange. The second photo is of our host and hostess, Dal Sanders, National President of the Society of American Magicians, with his lovely wife Cinde posing with Jeff Hallberg as Santa Claus. Thanks to Dal and Cinde and friends for another successful party!
Dallas IEC Annual Banquet & Christmas Party
That's yours truly performing my walk-around magic for the Dallas Independent Electrical Contractor's Association annual corporate banquet and Christmas party. Everyone had a great time, and my magic show got great reviews! Looking forward to next year's event for the IEC.
Texas Association of Magic Convention 2013
August 30 - September 2, 2013
If you've been wondering what I've been up to lately, here are a couple of photos of me at the recent Texas Association of Magicians convention in Dallas. I got to spend some time with one of my favorite magicians and comedians, Harry Anderson, best remembered as the judge from Night Court. I also got to meet actor Burton Guilliam, who has been in over fifty motion pictures, but you will likely remember him best as the railroad foreman in Blazing Saddles. Time would fail me if I tried to share all the things I learned about what it means to be a professional performer from these two successful entertainers. Let's just say, I had a great time, and I am looking forward to the next magic convention.
